ESP: The World Leader in Remote Sensing Technology
Years ago, ESP recognized the benefits of augmenting facility-based emissions testing programs with more convenient and effective on-road testing techniques. Motor vehicle exhaust emissions were getting cleaner and staying cleaner longer in the newer model year vehicles. The majority of the motor vehicle emissions in most metropolitan areas were attributable to a much smaller percentage of the on-road fleet. Finally, the approach of testing all cars in order to find the few that needed maintenance was coming under scrutiny.
ESP pioneered the remote sensing industry over a decade ago in 1991. We produced our first commercial remote sensing device in 1992 and dedicated the better part of the 1990s to improving the technology, demonstrating its effectiveness, establishing industry standards for equipment, and forging the legislative basis for remote sensing applications. Today our products and services are used all over the world. We perform all three applications of remote sensing and our breath of experience is unequalled worldwide. ESP has garnered a significant number of firsts with our patented Accuscan technology:
• First to build a commercial RSD unit (1992).
• First to pass California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) “dry-gas” specifications (1997) and the only company to consistently do so (2002, 2001).
• First company to conduct “pull over testing” (California, 1994) and the only company to do so.
• First company to conduct a high emitter identification program (Arizona, 1996) and the only company to ever do so.
• First company to conduct a clean screening program (Missouri, 2000) and the only company to do so.
• First company to conduct remote sensing based program evaluation and the only company to do so (Virginia, 2002).
ESP's AccuScanTM Remote Sensing
Technology is another innovation from Environmental Systems Products that
redefines today’s emissions inspection industry.
ESP's AccuScanTM simply and unobtrusively measures exhaust
emissions from vehicles as they are driven on streets and highways.
The process of measuring emissions remotely
begins when AccuScanTM sends infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV)
beams across the road and reflects them back from the Vertical Transfer Mirror
(VTM) to a series of detectors in the Source/Detector Module or SDM.
Fuel specific concentrations of HC, CO, CO2,
and NOX are determined in vehicle exhaust plumes based on measured
absorption of IR/UV light produced by the SDM.
During this process, the Video System Camera captures an image of the
license plate, while the Speed/Acceleration Sensors (S/A) record the
speed/acceleration of each vehicle. The
emissions and other related data are stored in a computer processor monitored
by an AccuScanTM operator stationed in a van parked along the
roadside. This entire process is
amazingly accomplished in less than a single second!
